Object: Tall bone pyxis

Period: Approx. 2nd to 7th cent. AD.
Hard to date exactly due to the lack of close parallels.

Description:    Tall pyxis made of bone. The cylindrical body is decorated by the drill and by engravings, including a schematic mythical creature. Added base and lid with ovoid grip.
An origin in the Eastern Mediterranean or Central Europe is conceivable.

Dimensions: 100mm tall (incl. lid and grip), 22mm diameter.

Condition: Great condition. Body complete with wonderfully preserved details. Two long vertical cracks at the upper rim, which have been stabilized and glued together with the lid.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2017 from the private posession of M. Voos, Germany. Inherited by M. Voos from the Germany private collection H. Herbst. Acquired for the collection between 1976 and 1978 in London, probably at Davies Antiques.
