Object number
AR3261C
Object:       Statuette of a standing woman

Material: Red clay with polychrome painting.

Date: 4th - early 3rd century B.C.
Probably Cyrenaica.

Description:    A young woman standing frontally. Her left leg is placed in front of her right, her right arm on her hip. She wears a belted chiton, her hair piled up in an elaborate, voluminous hairstyle, topped with lotus buds. The details of her facial expressions and earrings are elaborately crafted.
The assumption expressed by Higgins in the reference below that the clay statuettes from Cyrenaica were inspired by Ptolemaic Egypt is supported by the depiction of the hair ornament, which is strongly reminiscent of the depiction of Harpocrates with a double crown and lotus buds (cf., for example, AR1698-01 in our archive).

Size: Height 27.1cm, width 9cm.

Condition: Left arm missing, some small, stable cracks, otherwise in excellent condition. The body is intact and stable, with parts of the original polychrome painting still clearly visible. Overall, an impressive figure.

Reference: Vgl. R.A. Higgins, Greek Terracottas (London 1967) S. 133 und Taf. 64A.

Provenance: Acquired 2021 in a German auction house. Ex German private collection Helge Deikner (federal state of Nordrhein-Westfalen), acquired before 1980.
