Description:    Terra cotta figurine of the Egyptian dwarf god Bes with shield. The god wears a leonine mask with a snub nose, stylized beard and furrowed brow. The feather crown which the god originally has worn is broken in antiquity. Summary treatment of the back, typical for such terra cotta pieces in Ptolemaic and Roman times.
It is remarkable that the fingers of the right hand are brought to the mouth, an iconographic elements which is otherwise typical for Harpokrates iconography.

Background: Bes was a god to protect from evil. He was the patron of children and pregnant women.

Dimensions: 60 mm height without modern base, 126 mm height with base, 55 mm wide

Condition: Fragment of a hollow figure, body and pat of the body preserved, crown broken. The fragment itself is very well preserved and worked in a very detailed way. Mounted on a modern black base, with sticker "Horus Romano-Egyptian" by Davies Antiques.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2017 from the private posession of M. Voos, Germany. Inherited by M. Voos from the Germany private collection H. Herbst. Acquired 1976 - 1978 from Davies Antiques, London for the Herbst collection and brought to Germany.
