Object: Two Mesopotamian mosaic cones

Material: Stone.

Period: Middle to Late 4th Millenium BC.
Bronze Age of Mesopotamia.

Description:    Two stone cones, with a smooth blunt side that was once visible. The pieces were part of a mosaic decoration of a Mesopotamian structure. The pointed end was stuck into the still wet clay wall of the structure, the blunt end then formed part of the decorative surface of thousands of cones.
The temple architecture from Uruk is a particularly well known example of the use of such mosaic cones.

Dimensions: 7.8cm and 7.9cm lengths, respectively.

Condition: Very good condition. Tips broken off, presumably old damage, which was not noticeable because only the blunt end was visible.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2021 on the German art market. Previously in the German private collection of Helge Deikner (1926-2021). Acquired into the collection in the 1970s or earlier.
