Object:       Skyphos (wine cup with two handles)

Material: Red clay with black slip

Date: About 4th century BC

Description:    High bowl or shallow cup with two horizontal handles. Decorated inside with four palmettes and double concentric ring of small triangular indents. Fully covered with glossy black slip.

Size: Diameter 186mm with and 110mm without handles, height 51 mm.

Condition: Very good condition, slip mainly preserved. With label "6A CPJV £45", probably from Davies Antiques gallery, and a probably older label from an earlier collection "Greek Skyphos found Alexandri[a]".

Provenance: Acquired 2017 from the German private collection M. Voos, inherited in this from the German private collection H. Herbst. Acquired for the Herbst collection in 1976 to 1978 at Davies Antiques Gallery, London (copy of the invoice is at hand).
