Object:       Kantharos

Material: Red-figure pottery
Red clay with black slip

Date: 4th century B.C.
South Italian, Apulian.

Description:    High foot with three-staged discus. High, cylindrical body with thin flat rim. High concave handles.
One side shows Herakles fighting a centaur. Herakles is pushing the centaur to the ground with his left leg, the right arm with the no longer preserved club is raised over his head. The centaur is raising on his back limbs and turning his head back to Herakles. Left in the field a tree.
The other side shows a young satyr standing to the right, the right arm leaning on a tree, the left raised towards a sitting young woman dressed in a chiton.

Both scenes are very rare, without a parallel on any kantharos known to us. For a comparable, but much older black figure depiction of Herakles fighting the centaurs, see
Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum. Berlin, Antikensammlung 14, 44-45, Beilage 4.2, Pls. 14.4, 15.3-4, 56.6
Possibly the painter of this kantharos was inspired by a more ancient piece. Very delicate piece of art, painting of exquisite workmanship for an apulian vase.

Size: Height 161 mm with and 128 mm without handles, diameter 145 mm with and 98 mm without handles.

Condition: Very good overall impression. Professionally restored from few fragments, one fragment of 3cm x 7cm missing and remodeled in red clay. Foot glued.
