Late Antiquity and thereafter

Ancient numismatics – Coins from the Late Antiquity until the modern times

The epoch nowadays referred to as Late Antiquity or the Byzantine Era is commonly understood to have begun with the reign of Constantine the Great and the relocation of the capital to Constantinople, or at least the division of the Roman Empire following the death of Theodosius I. In the world of coinage, the beacon of this time was the golden Solidus that for centuries was a synonym for stability and became the most prominent coin in the Occident, while the bronze Follis with its innumerable subdivisions rapidly lost its value. While the focus of the Alte Roemer Gallery numismatics section is on coins from the Classical Antiquity, we always try to keep for you a selection of interesting coins from the Late Roman Empire and the Byzantine Epoch. Another focus is set on the coinage from the early Renaissance, and in particular on the so-called cob coins from the Spanish Colonies, among which the 8 Reales became known to the public through R.L. Stevenson’s “Treasure Island” as Pieces of Eight or pirate money. It would be our pleasure to work with you individually on your personal collection, and help you find special pieces that you would like to add to it. Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time via email or using our contact form. Correspondence is welcome in English, German, Italian, French, Russian or Japanese.
